An accessibility index for Bangkok

Paper: Wanichjaroenporn, Wongkaew, Muanyoksakul, Surangsrirout, Bunditsakulchai. Public Transport Accessibility Index for Bangkok and Its Application. Transportation Research Record, accepted (2025). Listings: publications, research one-pager.

This is Kongtup’s lead. I am writing as a coauthor, not as the PI. I will not paste a results table the journal has not put on a DOI yet.

Question

Bangkok talks about “coverage” as if a station on the map were access. Coverage is geometry. Accessibility is whether a person at a given place, at a given time, can reach the places that count, at a cost of time (and usually money) they will actually pay. The paper builds an index for that, then an application — without the application the index is a colour ramp.

The user is a planner who needs to see where public transport fails, not a ranking of cities for a press release.

What I am willing to say before the DOI

  • The object is a public-transport accessibility index for Bangkok, plus a use of that index (spatial inequality in access — that is the application named in the abstract we list).
  • I treat a single citywide accessibility number as a headline, not a finding. The finding is the map and the comparison (who is in the high tail, who is in the low tail, what happens if access to the station changes mode).
  • This sits next to the Blue Line GWR. GWR asks how land use loads a station. The index asks whether you can use the system at all. They are not substitutes.

Coauthorship, plainly

Wanichjaroenporn first. Bunditsakulchai last. I am in the middle with Wachira and Nattakarn. If you cite it, cite the author order. If you only need the ridership–land-use paper, that is the other one, and I am first author there.

What comes after the DOI

When TRR assigns a link, it goes on papers.bib and this post gets a one-line update. Until then the honest status is accepted, which is already better than “we have an index.” I will not fill the gap with numbers from a related thesis or a workshop slide.
